A North Yorkshire company has raised £2,000 for a children’s charity through the recycling of thousands of used ink and toner cartridges. The firm in question is TLC Business Supplies, which specialises in quality stationery and office furniture.

Tom and Sandra Lawrence head up the eight strong TLC team and have been involved in the Superstat Recycling programme for five years. This is run by K2 Supplies, which recovers, buys and sells used toner and inkjet cartridges.

Tom says, “Sandra and I are passionate about both recycling and fund-raising for charities. So we decided to combine the two!

“TLC has raised more than £16,000 for numerous charities over the years, something which we are very proud of. “Through the Superstat Recycling Programme we are able to collect used ink cartridges from our customers. K2 then buys the cartridges from us and we donate that money to charities.”

Last year TLC Business Supplies presented a cheque for £1,757 to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity, (see below) at their premises in Ripon Business Park. A representative of the organisation, Andy Overton, explained that TLC’s efforts were much appreciated, especially as Yorkshire Air Ambulance needed money to keep two helicopters in the skies. At that time they were only able to this during peak times.

Tom Lawrence explains that cartridge re-cycling has always been important to Sandra and him, “Not only does this raise money for worthwhile charities but helps the environment by avoiding the overburdening of landfill sites and so causing pollution." TLC’s most recent fund raising effort is their biggest achievement yet.

A cheque for £2,000 was recently presented on their behalf to bibic Based in Bridgwater, Somerset, this is a national children’s charity.

Jess Winchester is Fundraising and Communications Manager for bibic. She says, “We support families who care for children with a variety of conditions such as cerebral palsy; Down's syndrome, autism; brain injuries and dyslexia. Raising funds is a continuing challenge for charities and bibic is no different so the efforts of businesses like TLC are, literally, priceless.

“I’d just like to give a big thank you to Tom and Sandra Lawrence and their team for this wonderful donation.”

TLC’s work in recycling has recently been recognised by K2 Supplies. The firm has been awarded a Certificate of Recycling Achievement, for collecting 3,356 used ink cartridges during 2010.

Through the efforts of Superstat members like TLC Business Services, K2 has been able to recycle over 31,000 used ink and toner cartridges. This is the equivalent of 4.5 tonnes of waste that would otherwise have been sent to landfill facilities.

Tom Lawrence, 53, explains, “Sandra and I established a fund some time ago with which to support our efforts for charity and this has proven to be very successful. We are now thinking about which charity to support in 2011.

“So, anyone out there who has used ink cartridges – send ‘em to us!”

Presenting cheque to Yorkshire Air AmbulanceYorkshire Air Ambulance Receives 'Tender Loving Care'

The local business supplies firm of TLC in Ripon recently gave a cheque to support the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity for £1,757.57 after raising the money by collecting and re-cycling customers' old toner cartridges. The cheque was presented to a representative of the Air Ambulance, Andy Overton, at their premises in Ripon Business Park.

Sandra Lawrence, MD of the firm said; "Cartridge re-cycling has always been a keen target for our company. Not only does this raise money for worthwhile charities, it also helps to save the environment by avoiding overburdening landfill sites and causing pollution."

Over the years the company has raised more than £14,000 for numerous charities. Sandra said at the presentation that the Yorkshire Air Ambulance was always a charity worth supporting and she was pleased that the company could help in this small way.

Andy Overton for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance told the staff that they were currently trying to raise extra money to keep two Air Ambulances in the skies but were only able to do so at present during peak times.

TLC is to continue collecting empty cartridges from its customers and thereby will continue, in the future, to raise money for good causes. Any empty toner cartridges that members of the public wish to drop off to be re-cycled for charity, can be left at their retail shop 'Stuff 4 Offices' in Queen Street in Ripon.
